I’ve never taken a moment for granted with any of the polar bear encounters I’ve been so fortunate to have. Looking back through images of this encounter with this female bear & her two cubs is no exception. It really hits home for me knowing that my next polar bear trip is now highly in jeopardy. The freeze on Hudson Bay has started early & unless the winds of change come in and blow the ice off shore my trip will be all for not. Once the ice is thick enough for the bears they are gone for the winter to hunt seals.
There hasn’t been an early freeze in Churchill for sometime now & it’s going to be a tough pill to swallow for me. But the good news in all this is for the polar bears. They need all the time on the ice to hunt that they can get. Especially this day in age. So while this will break my heart & likely be a very costly expedition all for not, I am grateful the bears will have a longer hunting season on the ice.
