Bear Metabolism

A new study just released shows polar bears need a lot more food than previously thought. Bear metabolism is about 60% higher than previous estimates. Meaning they need to eat many more seals than previously predicted. Over 1/2 the bears studied lost 2-5 lbs per day over the 10 day study. A study that took place during the bears peak hunting season. The main reason for the weight loss. . A lack of sea ice for the bears to be able to hunt & catch seals. Note this study was done in just one region & results may very with different populations. One fact of the matter is, sea ice the polar bears main hunting ground is shrinking year by year. You can read more about this study on the National Post. Photographed on assignment with One Ocean Expeditions
